Pekingese losing hair & teeth?

My grandma%26#039;s dog, a pekingese, is 10 or 11 years old and constantly scratches herself, to the point where she is losing hair (her hair never really got long like you see in dog shows). She also loses teeth occasionally and smells really bad, even though my grandma gives her a bath almost every day. She still acts the same as she always has, we just don%26#039;t know what%26#039;s wrong with her. Any ideas?

P.S. Please, this is a serious question. If you don%26#039;t have a serious answer then don%26#039;t answer at all.

Pekingese losing hair %26amp; teeth?
Losing hair and teeth is a sign of something serious going on. Dogs, even older ones, don%26#039;t just go bald and lose teeth nor do they smell bad if they are healthy.

Losing teeth is a sign of serious dental infection, which can lead to organ failure if left untreated. The dog really needs a good dental cleaning and a round of anti-biotics.

Losing the hair could be from any number of things from bad nutrition to mites. It really needs to be diagnosed by a vet.

All signs are pointing to the fact that this dog needs to be seen by a vet. Things are not at all going well for this poor dog. Even though 10/11 is getting up there for a dog, small dogs can easily live to their later teens so there is no reason that this dog can%26#039;t be given at least a few more years with good vet care.
Reply:her teeth probably need professional cleaning, its common with older dogs. she could really use a vet check up and a full blood panal checked. bathing almost every day isn%26#039;t the best for her, it will make her skin itchy.
Reply:If the dog is losing teeth, she needs dental attention. A vet can schedule that for you.

Also check her for allergies or dry skin: While most dogs scratch some, constantly is too much.

Good luck!
Reply:Dogs get old.

Some smaller dogs, and just some dogs have problems with their teeth. Rotting teeth will cause bad breath. It would be a good idea to talk to the vet. . .see if she is able to be put under to operate to remove the teeth.

She could have an underlying infection.

Make sure she is on a really good diet.

I wouldn%26#039;t bathe the dog every day. . .it could irritate the dog, they need their natural oils. That could be what is causing hair loss. Too much of a good thing.

If you have the money, a blood workup is good to do when they get to the senior age. It cost me about 300 , but it was either that or keep having the vet tell me it was kidney problems and treat her for that, when it turned out to be hyperlipidemia (pancreas).
Reply:First, the dog is old. Secondly, she has dental problems, common in older dogs.... this requires an anesthetic and have her teeth scaled, and of course there are problems with older dogs and anesthesia. at 11, this is a 77 year old person.

Secondly the skin problems are an allergy, to about about anything in the dog%26#039;s environment --- grass, or other plants, and or a food ingredient that is the offending item(s)

Your grandmother needs to take her dog to a vet, and get some help with it. Cheap? Nope. Taking care of any 77 year old is never cheap.
Reply:She%26#039;s a very old dog, and tooth loss is not uncommon. As for the smell, it can be associated with numerous conditions, and bathing every day honestly just makes it worse. Bathing removes the natural oils and conditioners in the dog%26#039;s skin.

This dog really needs to see a vet to see what the hair loss is about.
Reply:One sure way to ruin a dogs coat and cause VERY itchy skin is to bath it too often. As far as the teeth are concerned you are talking about an older dog. Does she have her teeth cleaned? Dogs, especially those that are given %26quot;treats%26quot; are more susceptible to tooth decay. Dogs also need routine dental care. See a vet for a skin conditioner and have the teeth examined. Then only bath the dog once or twice a year. My Peke was a therapy dog until the constant bathing (which is required prior to a visit) damaged her skin and coat. She is now retired.
Reply:She really needs to see her vet. These are problems that he may need to help with.
Reply:If she is scratching she could have allergies. When my dog%26#039;s hair started falling out, the vet couldn%26#039;t help. I had to take her to an animal dermatologist. Constantly scratching, losing hair, and a bad smell is very serious. This dog is suffering. Please take it to a vet or dermatologist.
