When does a puppy start losing puppy teeth?

My lab puppy is 4 months old and he lost a tooth in the front. It looks fine, I'm just wondering if this is about the right age for it to happen. Also, how fast will the new tooth come in, and how will it be different from the puppy tooth?

Around 4 to 5 months of age, puppies will start to get their permanent teeth.He is going to need to chew a lot right now. His gums will be irritating him because he is cutting his adult teeth. Something that I find eases their discomfort and guides their chewing to allowed items is to buy one of the rope toys with the knots in each end. Be sure to get a larger one for your Lab. Soak the rope in chicken broth (you can buy it by the can or carton at the grocery store) until it has absorbed lots of the broth, then freeze it. Give it to your pup and the fact that it is frozen will ease the pain in his gums and the chicken broth will encourage him to chew it. Works great!


Puppies lose their teeth in a distinct pattern: first the small front teeth come out. Then the premolars just behind the canines. Then the molars in the back come out (and you'll see adult molars behind those erupting as well). Finally the canine teeth come out. Sometimes the adult canines erupt before the baby canines have come all the way out
Reply:Dogs lose puppy teeth the same way you lost baby teeth. It happens at 3-6 mos, and the new ones will come in pretty quickly. The only difference is they are bigger and stronger.

Reply:They start losing their teeth around 4 months of age. Chances are you'll never find a tooth, they tend to swallow them. Give her lots of things to chew on. Frozen kongs, ice cubes, those rope toys can be dipped in water and frozen will help take the pain away. You'll probably notice blood on things, don't worry it's natural.





If you don't give her something to chew on, she'll almost definitely chew on something you don't want her too. Teething usually lasts until about a year when their jaws mature and their teeth are set.

Reply:ok i have a lab 2 and he just turned a year old not to long ago, but he started losing his teeth around 4 months! and they grew back pretty quick! and the way they are different is the adult tooth is a lot bigger and its not needle sharp like the puppy tooth!!!
Reply:Your pup sounds fine- they can loose their teeth from 306 mths. Ensure he has plenty of hard objects to chew and as mentioned by another user- a frozen rope toy(even just soaked in water) helped to cool his gums.





You can tell the difference becoz the adult teeth will be larger- check to see that there is no retained teeth as they need to be taken out.





I'm not the best person to ask as to how you tell if a pup has retained teeth- so if ur concerned- maybe ask another question.
Reply:Puppies start teething at around 3.5 months and will lose the first tooth at 4 months. This will carry on for another 2 to 3 months. The new teeth are not as sharp as the baby teeth, are very white and much bigger. New teeth will come in shortly after the baby teeth as the adult teeth push the baby teeth out. The new teeth come in once a baby tooth has fallen out. This is an ongoing process and the teeth do not come all at once. Don't forget, they also will lose the canines (fangs)and molars.





In my experience most dogs will finish teething at 7 months. This means the whole process will be completed, from the loosening, falling out and growth of adult teeth. Once the adult teeth are in, thats it, no more teething or new teeth. If your dog loses an adult tooth it will not grow back.





Give him things to chew. Ice works well, they love it and you can flavour it with beef or chicken broth.
